overall for a key that is about 75 years old (1) the chrome plated sending arm & plated continuity strip look G00D with minor blemishes. Both have been hand polished. (2) the brass screws, nuts, and circuit closing switch look G00D with 0RIGINAL BRASS PATINA. There are minor blemishes visible. (3) the  black finish on the custom wood base looks VERY G00D & the rounded corners & viewing hole for the LIONEL L are
GREAT DESIGN FEATURES!
(4) the black painted metal key base & knobs look G00D with minor blemishes. J-38, TEL. & LINE on the plastic base are visible & M0STLY EASY to READ. There are minor scratches on the the plastic base.
(5) the Lionel L and other LIONEL ID info on the top of the oval metal base are easy to see.  (6) The plastic knobs looks G00D, but there are minor blemishes on both.

MALFUNCTIONS:
<1> When this key became part of my LIONEL J-38 COLLECTION,  it was partially disassembled, cleaned, hand polished & lubricated. <2> all the brass parts have their original clear coat & the patina is quite nice. However, the dark heavily tarnished circuit closing switch was polished and clear coated to make it more compatible to the rest of the key.<3> I then spent time making the custom N0-TIP N0-SLIP W00D BASE with rounded corners and viewing hole for the LIONEL L. AN UNMOUNTED J-38 IS IMPOSSIBLE TO USE!
This VINTAGE  WWII LIONEL J-38, would make an 0UTSTANDING ADDITION to ANY KEY or MILITARY COLLECTION or for use on the air, especially during the MANY SKCC events or ARRL Straight Key Night.
COMMENTS:
The LIONEL J-38 straight keys have always been my favorite version of the famous WWII straight key, and I have had quite a few of them in my large straight key collection. The rounded corners on my wooden base & the viewing hole for the LIONEL L improves on the original look. Unlike most of the WWII J-38 keys, LIONEL used larger contacts, which guarantees solid CW keying! This LIONEL J-38 would definitely be a great addition to any straight key or LIONEL collection.
~WHY GET IN A BIDDING WAR YOU MIGHT NOT WIN or POSSIBLY END UP with a BEATER J-38 that WILL NEED a BASE & CLEANING, WHEN YOU CAN BUY A GREAT LOOKING LIONEL THAT HAS a CUST0M BASE  & IS READY TO USE or DISPLAY?
