WOODCHUCKS AND WOODCHUCK RIFLESby Charles Singer Landis
2012 FACSIMILE EDITION OF THE 1951 CLASSIC
~~~~
Now back in print after many long years, this classic volume is absolutely packed with
information on woodchuck varmint rifles, factory and wildcat cartridges, and period scopes. A
MUST-READ
for all modern and nostalgic varmint rifle enthusiasts, varmint hunters, and shooters.
This 2012 softcover reprint of the original 1951 classic volume of
Woodchucks and Woodchuck Rifles
contains detailed and entertaining information on the shooting and hunting of woodchucks that cannot be found anywhere else.
It contains a short, technical description of the different varieties of the North American woodchuck and their habitat. Most of the book is devoted to varmint rifles, factory and wildcat cartridges, and rifle scopes used in the United States and Canada. A wide variety of resourceful, skilled, and successful woodchuck hunters and famous gunsmiths discuss custom rifles, commercial and wildcat cartridges and loads, and detailed descriptions of their chuck-shooting experiences.
In these pages you will find information about a good number of Wildcat cartridges that were either designed (and rifles chambered) between 1930 and 1950, or at the time of the writing of this book, were not widely advertised to the public. This data concerns cartridges such as the .170 Parkinson, .170 Landis Woodsman, the three .25 caliber Donaldson bench-rest and woodchuck cartridges, the .22 Hornet and the .22 K-Hornet, the .219 Zipper and .219 Improved Zipper, .219 Donaldson Wasp, the rare .22 Hawker developed by Albert L. Hartung, the .222 Remington, .220 Swift, .22-250 (.22 Varminter)and the R-2 Lovell, to name just a few.
Landis and the other contributors like P.O Ackley and Eric Farr provide information on a plethora of rifle and target scopes, such as the Winchester 1885 High Wall, Model 52, Model 70, Sharps Borchardt, Springfield, Enfield, Remington
Hepburn, Stevens 44 1/2, Custom Mausers, Fecker, Lyman, Unertl, Weaver, and much more. They discuss sights, scope mounting, rifle weights, shooting accuracy, varmint stock dimensions and wood types, and much more.
This is a practical, not a theoretical book, written in a easy-to-read, concise language from the contributors' points of view. Results discussed are based on the shooting of thousands of woodchucks. Landis has seen more than 500 to 600 woodchucks in one hunting trip, and his party has bagged at least 350 of those. Some of the contributors to this book found or bagged even more. Out of this wide range of experience comes the lore and advice contained in these pages---how, when, where, and with what tools a rifleman shoots the wiley varmint. The advice is suitable to many other types of varmint and predator hunting situations, as well.
This book is so full of information not found anywhere else that if you have the least bit of interest in varmint rifles, you probably won't be able to put it back on the shelf.
